The brief: Neo Signs, a Manukau-based signwriter, was installing a new exterior north-facing illuminated sign at Harvey Norman Manukau. They needed an electrical contractor to handle the driver enclosure, the supply cable from the existing distribution board, and the control side (photocell switching). We took the electrical scope so Neo Signs could focus on the sign itself.

What we delivered

The electrical install broke into three pieces:

1. Driver enclosure and gear tray

We supplied and installed a complete driver enclosure — the weatherproof housing that holds the LED driver hardware powering the sign. The enclosure was fitted out with the gear tray, isolation switch, socket outlet and side-entry plugs ready for the signwriter to plug the sign into. Mounted next to the existing roof penetration where the sign cable comes through.

This is the kind of work that often gets short-changed on signage projects — the enclosure sits on the roof, out of sight, but it's the difference between a sign that works reliably for ten years and one that's back on a fault-finding call inside twelve months.

2. 75 metre cable run to the existing distribution board

The bigger piece of the job: pulling a dedicated supply circuit from the existing distribution board in the electrical department, through the suspended ceiling cavity, all the way out to the new driver enclosure on the roof.

The cable was secured to existing catenary wire support systems where they were available, and saddled into the structure where they weren't. A clean run, properly labelled at the board as "North-facing illuminated signage" so any future electrician knows what they're looking at.

3. Photocell control

The sign turns on and off automatically based on ambient light, using a rooftop-mounted photocell switch. No need for staff to remember to flick a switch each evening — the sign lights as dusk falls, turns off at sunrise.
