Mains and Switchboard Upgrades — When Older Waikato Homes Need Them

If your house was built before the mid-1980s and the switchboard hasn't been touched since, there's a good chance it's the original. Ceramic fuses, no RCDs, a single bus bar, and a row of black-handled switches that were sized for a kettle, an oven, and a two-bar heater.

That's most of inner-Hamilton, the older streets of Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Morrinsville and Paeroa, the bach belt on the Coromandel, and a fair chunk of the heritage housing in Thames. It's also a board that's now running a heat pump, an induction cooktop, a dishwasher, a hot water cylinder, a home office full of monitors, and maybe an EV charger in the garage.

What mains and switchboard upgrade actually means

Mains upgrade is the cable from the street (or pole) to your house, and the meter box. Older mains were often sized for a smaller maximum demand — 60 amps, sometimes less. Modern houses with multiple high-load appliances easily push 100 amps or more. If you're tripping the main fuse, or your supply isn't enough for what you want to plug in, the mains is the bottleneck.

Switchboard upgrade is the board inside the house — the panel with the breakers (or fuses) that splits the supply into the circuits for each part of the house. A modern board uses RCBOs (residual current breakers with overcurrent protection) on every circuit, so a fault on one circuit doesn't take out the whole house, and you're protected against earth leakage as well as overload.

The two jobs often happen together because once the board is being changed, it makes sense to check the mains is sized for the new load.

How to tell if your switchboard is due for a lift

Ceramic fuses with wire links — these are the old-school fuses where if it blows, you have to fit a new wire. If you still have these, the board is probably 1970s or earlier. No RCDs at all — modern code requires earth leakage protection on most circuits. You trip the main switch when you turn the kettle on with the heat pump running — supply or board is undersized. A burning smell, browning around the breakers, or warm switches — get it looked at this week.

What the work actually involves

A switchboard upgrade is usually a one-day job for a residential property. Power off at the street, remove the old board and assess the existing cabling, install the new RCBO-protected switchboard properly labelled, re-terminate every circuit, test every circuit before re-energising — insulation, earth, polarity, RCBO function — energise and verify every part of the house is back online, and issue the Certificate of Compliance for the work.

If the mains is being upgraded as well, that adds a half-day for the connection back to the street and the meter box update.
